Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 at Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. Her aunt worked the evening shift as a nurse to ensure she could pursue her love for theater and art during the day. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used as an instrument for activism. Her mother, too, was socially conscious and taught her to say something through the art of. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born, and was raised. Her father recalled the civil rights protests on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she was in Selma to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. The school was home to University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in college. DuVernay began her career as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned the responsibility of looking over the residence and scrutinizing the rubbish of one members of the juries. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks that she was assigned, the journalist chose to go on to a job in the field of publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio following her graduation from the college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched a number of promotion and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
